I was wondering if there's any particular reason to include a lip with two side screw holes in the J2 Turret Housing design. Wouldn't it be a simpler design if the J1 Platform was extended to support the entire J2 Turret Housing from beneath?

This gives a positive stop to the rotation of J2, without it one would rely on the 4 screws connecting J2 Turret Housing to the platform. It's harder to manufacture but a better mechanical solution.
