Hi All,

I finished installing J2 and J3 stepper motors (Lots of work left). J1 and J3 turn smoothly, while J2 is not smooth and actually vibrates when being manually turned. I removed the motor and inspected the inside but nothing seems misaligned. My knowledge of stepper motors is certainly at the beginning phase so I'm not sure what to look for except via general observation.

Thoughts?

When you say turned manually do you mean that you rotate the dual shaft on the encoder end rotating the motor shaft of the motor? or putting force on the arm itself trying to move the planetary gears? Im uncertain what you are experiencing relative to the vibrating but check that the wire lead ends are not twisted together - if the motor coils are crossed there is magnetic interference and the motor shaft will not turn smoothly.

Hey Chris,

Your answer was correct. When the wire leads were taped together and shorted there was interference, which led to a rough ride within the stepper motor. Having fun building the kit with my students. Wish we could put one of these in all schools! Have a great weekend!
