J4 JST SH Connector Crimp Failure

I was soldering J4 brown wire to the cat5 and gave it a gentle tug to make sure the connection was tight after I heated the heatshrink, the brown wire pulled out of the crimp terminal without the crimped end on it. Since it is microscopic I failed to repair it, need a new pigtail to fix this.

I can't find any details on exactly what the connector is, it seems like a JST SH 9 pin with 1mm spacing, and 1 pin unused. Can anyone confirm?

Chris Annin

Im not certain on the pigtail type but I will try to find out, we should be able to get a replacement from Stepperonline.

Chris Annin seems they are on Chinese new year holiday

to speed things up I found some pigtails on Amazon that look like a match, will know tomorrow.. 9 pin jst sh 1mm pitch female and the max awg that fits in there is 28awg so I went with that

I don’t know if the crimp failed from the factory or if I caused it, I’m going to err on the side of caution and assume that I overheated the wire while soldering which somehow made it release the crimp.. lesson learned they are pretty delicate

Sam L was this a match? I need a replacement as well.

Sam L

Joachim Dahl the amazon order I placed got lost in their warehouse so they just refunded me and I reordered it - supposed to arrive tomorrow, I’ll let you know the outcome

Sam L

Received them finally. They do fit, but you have to carefully flush cut the sides of the connector off so it matches the old one. The pitch, pinout, and gauge are correct.

I don’t have it ready to test calibration so I can’t say if it actually works yet. Hoping to make some progress then find out tonight.

Joachim Dahl

Sam L Thanks a lot, that's helpful! I guess you just need to run the "Test Encoders" program without powering on the motors to test it.

Sam L

Joachim Dahl I got to the point I could test the encoder, it was successful using the replacement connector

Joachim Dahl

Sam L That's good to know. I pulled out of the encoder wires trying during a rewiring, so this is very useful.

Chris Annin

OK sounds good. I did send a message to my contact at Stepperonline and I will keep you posted what I hear back.

Joachim Dahl

Chris Annin If you manage to get info on the connectors for the different motors, then that would be very useful.

Chris Annin

I did receive a reply from Stepperonline and they will be getting information back to me on this. They are currently out of office with the Chinese new year holiday but I expect to hear back Feb 26th.
