j4 motor extremely hot
just starting my robot and after a few minuets I noticed that the j4 motor was extremely hot, enough to burn if I touch it. I double checked my dip switches and is correct for software ver. 6.2.1 on,off,on,off,on,on. Any advice here as I'm sure this isn't normal.
You are correct that its not normal - It should never be that hot, it should only be warm to the touch. Typically an overtemp motor is due to the amperage setting. From what you notes it sounds like you have it correct. Typical issues like this are due to mistaken dip position - sometimes people are looking at them in reverse thinking up is on and down is off. Another issue I have seen is the wires being accidentally connected to the wrong motor. I would not power it on with the motor getting to the temp but if you unplug the J4 driver can you verify the other 5 axis are jogging as expected to confirm they are all wired correctly. And then confirm the dip switch directions.
Chris Annin yes, double checked the dip switches. All other motors move correctly with j4 disconnected.
J4 also moves correctly, just gets hot. I have also checked belt tension and movements. It gets hot just setting, so seems like a current issue.
Ok can you verify all the drives are in the correct order and that it is a DM320T connected to J4 and not a DM332T?
Chris Annin that was it. I missed that there were 2 different drivers. All of that is straightened out and j4 is running cool. Thanks for the quick response and helpful support. Hopefully this robot will have a full time job by the end of the year. Will be using it to stack books in a print shop.
